A WKL control or the reference is missing (wrong bitness)

One of these happens:

  • The WKL controls are missing from Form Design › Controls › ActiveX Controls.
  • Tools › References marks WKL Forms x.y Object Library as MISSING („NICHT VORHANDEN“).
  • New WklToast or New WklLinkManager fails with run-time error 429 („ActiveX component can't create object“).
  • A form opens with an empty white rectangle where a WKL control was.

Environment

Every release of the WKL Forms Object Library, on PCs where the control is not registered for the bitness of Office or for the current Windows user.

Cause

  • Other bitness. A DLL serves one bitness only. 32-bit Office loads the x86 files, registered with the regsvr32 of %windir%\SysWOW64; 64-bit Office loads the x64 files, registered with the regsvr32 of %windir%\System32. Windows keeps the registrations of the two bitnesses apart.
  • Other Windows user. A registration with /n /i:user belongs to the user who ran it. Another user of the same PC sees nothing.
  • Folder moved or deleted. The registration points to the folder the DLL was registered from.

Resolution

  1. Find the bitness of Office: File › Account › About Access.
  2. Register the DLL of that bitness for the current user, as in How to: Install the released package, step 4.
  3. Close and reopen the database, so that Access resolves the reference again.
