Texts appear in another language than expected
Environment
WKL Forms Object Library 1.54 or later; all controls, designers and objects in Access and the Access runtime. In Excel and Word UserForms the components follow the user interface language of Windows.
Cause
Each database chooses the language of the components once, when a WKL component first works in it:
the language of the application model (language), otherwise the user interface language of Office,
otherwise of Windows, otherwise English. Typical reasons for a surprise:
- The model sets a language. It wins over Office and Windows for every user of the application.
- Office speaks a language the components do not have (for example French): the choice falls through to Windows, and with a French Windows too, to English.
- The Office user interface language differs from what the menus suggest: the components read the language Office reports for its user interface, not its editing or help language, and not the setting of another Office application.
- The application has texts, but not in the Office language: its texts take the first language they exist in (model, Office, Windows), and the components follow when they speak it. A Slovenian Office on a German Windows shows an application with German texts only in German; a text without its own translation shows the neutral text, then English.
- A file in the language folder
i18nnext to the database overrides the text of the table with the same key and language. - A window was open before the language changed: a designer or a form keeps its texts until it opens again.
- WKL Office JSON answered before any WKL component ran in the database: it then follows Windows.
Resolution
- Look at the application designer, page Allgemein, card Sprache der Komponenten: choose the language for the application, or Automatisch (Office, Windows).
- Check the language Office reports in the Immediate window:
? Application.LanguageSettings.LanguageID(2)(1033 English, 1031 German, 1060 Slovenian, 1050 Croatian, 1040 Italian). - Close and open the form or designer again after a change.
- Compare
Err.Numberin code, neverErr.Description: the description changes with the language, the number does not.
