Entries from the navigation table are missing

A WklNavBar bound to a table or query shows the designed entries instead of the rows, or some rows are missing, have no symbol, or appear in a different place than expected.

Environment

WKL Forms Object Library 1.25 and later (navigation table), on Access forms.

Cause

The bar never rejects a faulty table, so the form always opens. Instead, it falls back or skips rows:

  • The source couldn't be read (for example, an unknown table or a misspelled field name): the bar shows the designed entries (Items).
  • The bar isn't bound: RecordSource or KeyField is empty. Both are required.
  • A row was skipped: it has no key, a key that already appeared (the first row wins; case doesn't matter), a parent key that no row has, or it's two levels deep (the bar has only one level of groups).
  • A row is hidden: Visible is No. A Yes/No column in an Access table is never Null, so a row added without a value is No.
  • A value was ignored but the row was shown: an invalid glyph code, place, or target kind, or a target in a group row (choosing a group header collapses the group).
  • A bottom entry isn't in its group: entries at the bottom edge have no group.
  • The table changed while the form was open: the bar reads the source when it first needs its content, and again only on Requery or when a binding property changes.

Resolution

  1. Read what the bar reported, in the Immediate window while the form is open:

    Debug.Print Forms!frmShell!navMain.Object.LoadProblems

The first line is the read error, if there is one, followed by one line for each row that was skipped or shown without its faulty value, in the form „Row 4: …“, numbered in the order the rows were read.

  2. For a read error, check the name in RecordSource and the field properties; Requery raises wkeSourceError with the text that Access reported.
  3. Correct the listed rows, then call Requery or reopen the form.
  4. In table Design view, give Visible and Enabled the default value Yes (the designer's template table already has it).
  5. The designer's Data source page shows the same problems while you choose the source and fields.
