The .NET 10 Desktop Runtime is not installed

When a form with a WKL control opens, Access shows the message “The .NET 10 Desktop Runtime (x86) is not installed on this computer …” (or “(x64)”; in German “Die .NET 10 Desktop Runtime (x86) ist auf diesem Rechner nicht installiert …”); the control stays empty and VBA calls to it fail.

The start module shows the message before .NET runs, without the application model, so its language follows Office in Access, otherwise Windows, otherwise English (English, German, Slovenian, Croatian or Italian), even when the application model sets another language for the components. Up to release 1.56.2 the message is German in every language and its umlauts show as two wrong characters (“öffnen”).

Environment

Every release of the WKL Forms Object Library, 32-bit and 64-bit Office, full Access and the Access runtime.

Cause

The controls run on .NET 10. Their start module looks for the .NET 10 Desktop Runtime of the Office bitness and finds none. A runtime of the other bitness does not help: 32-bit Office needs the x86 runtime also on 64-bit Windows. The .NET Runtime without “Desktop” is not enough either.

Resolution

  1. Find the bitness of Office: File › Account › About Access shows “32-bit” or “64-bit”.
  2. Install the .NET 10 Desktop Runtime of that bitness from https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/dotnet/10.0 (column “Desktop Runtime”, x86 for 32-bit Office, x64 for 64-bit Office).
  3. Restart Access.
