The application was made for another generation of the WKL components (code 37)

The window of the starter says: „This application was made for a different generation of the WKL components than the one used on this computer.“ Below it stands the error code 37; the diagnostic details (Alt+D) name the registered release and the version the application was built for. The exit code of the starter is 37.

Environment

WKL Bootstrapper 3.1 and later, for an application with WKL controls, on a computer where WKL Forms Object Library is registered for the user in another major version than the one the application was built for: release 1.x (type library WklComponents) on one side, release 2.0 or later (type library WklForms) on the other.

Cause

Release 2.0 of WKL Forms Object Library renamed its type library and keeps the class IDs of 1.x. For a Windows user, either 1.x or 2.x is registered, never both, and an application runs only against the major version it was built for: its VBA code names the type library.

The starter stops instead of registering the release the application delivers in one of two cases:

  • A later major version is registered than the one the application needs, and the starter cannot tell which other applications use it: the registration was made by a release package, by the IT, or by a delivery without registration.json. Registering the older release would take the later one away from every other application of the user.
  • The application delivers another major version than the registered one, and another installed application still needs the registered one.

Nothing is changed: the registration stays, and an installed version of the application keeps working as before.

Resolution

  1. Read the diagnostic details: they name the registered release, the release the application needs and, where it applies, the other application that needs the registered one.
  2. Have the applications of the user built for the same major version. An application for 1.x is moved to 2.0 once (WKL Forms Object Library: „How to: Move an application to release 2.0“), then delivered again.
  3. Start the application again once all applications of the user need the same major version.
