A database driver the application needs is not installed (code 34)
The window of the starter says: “A database driver the application needs is not installed.” Below it stands the error code 34; the diagnostic details (Alt+D) hold the technical detail, also the output of Wkl.Bootstrapper.exe /diagnose. The exit code of the starter is 34.
Environment
WKL Bootstrapper 1.0 and later on Windows 11; odbcDataSources from 1.0.1. Supported: Windows 11 with Microsoft Access of Microsoft 365, 32 bit.
Cause
One of two checks failed; the diagnostic details name which:
- A driver of
odbcDrivershas no keyHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC\ODBCINST.INI\<name>in the bitness of Access, or the DLL in its valueDriverdoes not exist. A 32-bit Access sees only 32-bit drivers. A driver installed only for the user has no such key: name its data source inodbcDataSourcesinstead. - A data source of
odbcDataSourcesis neither a user DSN nor a system DSN of the bitness of Access, or itsDriveris neither an installed driver name nor the path of an existing DLL of the bitness of Access. User DSNs are the same entry for both bitnesses, so a user DSN whose DLL has the other bitness fails here too. The path is taken literally:%LOCALAPPDATA%in it is not expanded.
Resolution
- Install the driver the diagnostic details name, in the bitness of Access, or create the data source they name with a driver of that bitness.
- For a driver installed only for the user, list its data source in
odbcDataSourcesrather than the driver inodbcDrivers.
