A part the application needs is set up on a drive that cannot be reached (code 36)
The window of the starter says: „A part the application needs is set up on a drive that cannot be reached right now.“ Below it stands the error code 36; the diagnostic details (Alt+D) name the registered path and its drive or share. The exit code of the starter is 36.
Environment
WKL Bootstrapper 2.0, for every delivery that registers a COM server (the WKL Forms Object Library or a server of a project of format 2), on a computer where that server is already registered from another folder.
Cause
The server is registered - by the release package, by the IT or by another installation - from a drive or share that cannot be reached now: an external drive that is not connected, a network share that is offline. The registration exists, but the file behind it cannot be read.
The starter does not register its own copy over such a registration. That would replace the registration of whoever made it, without a message and beyond this start: when the drive is back, every other application on the computer would get the starter's copy instead of the release it was set up with. A missing file in a folder that can be reached is different: the starter replaces it with the delivered copy, as a repair.
The case is not temporary for the starter: it does not wait or retry, and the next start checks again.
Resolution
- Read the diagnostic details: they name the registered path and the drive or share.
- Connect the drive or the network again and start once more.
- When that drive or share is gone for good, the registration has to be set up again from a folder that stays reachable (by whoever made it, usually the IT); then start again.
