The WKL components could not be set up (code 31)

The window of the starter says: “The WKL components could not be set up for you.” Below it stands the error code 31; the diagnostic details (Alt+D) hold the technical detail, also the output of Wkl.Bootstrapper.exe /diagnose. The exit code of the starter is 31.

Environment

WKL Bootstrapper 1.0 and later on Windows 11. Supported: Windows 11 with Microsoft Access of Microsoft 365, 32 bit.

Cause

Copying the components into %LOCALAPPDATA%\WKL\Components or registering them with regsvr32 /n /i:user failed, or the registration afterwards points at another file. The diagnostic details name the step and the exit code of regsvr32.

Resolution

  1. Start again; a file held by another program is free after a moment.
  2. If it persists: the user may lack write access to the own profile, or an antivirus program blocks regsvr32 - send the diagnostic details to the IT.
