Navigation, commands, and keyboard

This reference describes Bootstrapper Manager's window and how to work with it using the mouse and the keyboard. For a guided start, see the tutorial.

Every page in Bootstrapper Manager has the same layout: the navigation on the left; the page title, subtitle, status, and commands across the top; and the page content below, which is either a list or a set of fields. Once you know one page, you know them all.

Window layout

The Dateien page of a project with three numbered callouts: 1, the navigation on the left with Projekte, Probleme, and the Projekt and Installation groups; 2, the title Dateien and the subtitle "Dateien der Lieferung und ihr Ziel · Projekt Kasse (Kassensystem)" at the top; 3, the commands Dateien hinzufügen and Ordner hinzufügen. To the right of the navigation, the target tree and the list of files

The numbers in the screenshot match the numbered areas in the table. The status and notifications appear only when they're needed, so you don't see them in the screenshot.

AreaWhat it shows
1 Navigation (left)Projects (all your project files), Problems (the results of the last check, with a count), the Project group (General, Appearance, Launch target), and the Installation group (Files, Shortcuts, Actions, Conditions, File types, Registry, INI file). The pages in these two groups are available only while a project is selected. Select ≡ to collapse the navigation to icons, or drag the divider to resize it
2 Title and subtitleThe name of the page. The subtitle tells you what's on the page and, on every page except Projects, names the selected project (“Project Kasse (Kassensystem)”)
Status (upper right)Not saved appears when you have changes that haven't been saved to the project file yet. At the same time, a dot appears next to Projects in the navigation. See How to: Save a project
3 CommandsThe commands for the page. Less common ones are on the More menu
Notifications (lower right)Short messages such as “Saved to bootstrapper.json”. They don't interrupt your typing and disappear after a few seconds. Some include an action, such as Show

Edit lists and fields

  • Fields (General, Appearance, Launch target): Type a value or choose one from the list. If the last check found a problem with a field, the field is marked in red, and the starter's message for it is on the Problems page.
  • Lists (Files through INI file): Each entry has its own row, in the same order as in the project file. To edit a cell, double-click it, press F2, or just start typing. Use the last row to add an entry; the entry is created when you leave the row. Delete removes the selected rows, or, in the new row, discards what you typed. Right-click a list to sort, search, or export it.
  • Column widths and pane sizes are saved for each Windows account.

Every change is saved to Bootstrapper Manager's tables right away. To write your changes to the project file, select Save or press Ctrl+S.

Keyboard shortcuts

KeyWhat it does
Alt + underlined letterRuns that command; for example, Alt+C runs Check on the Projects page
Ctrl+SSaves the selected project, from any page

Notes

  • Unavailable pages: When no project is selected, the pages in the Project and Installation groups are unavailable. Select or open a project on the Projects page.
  • Tab stays in the list. This is by design, so that Tab moves from cell to cell. To get to the navigation, press F6.
