The terminal does not start

Terminal (ribbon or tab Terminal of the work area) reports “The terminal did not start: …”, for example with “The helper wkl-office.exe (terminal-host) was not found either”.

Environment

WKL Office SDK 0.1.0 and later, Access add-in.

Cause

Access does not allow a pseudo console inside its own process. The add-in therefore runs the shell through wkl-office terminal-host, a process of its own. When wkl-office.exe cannot be found, the terminal cannot start. The add-in looks for it, in this order:

  1. the file named by the environment variable WKL_OFFICE_CLI;
  2. bin\wkl-office.exe of the SDK package the add-in was installed from (addin\<bitness>\..\..\bin);
  3. the folders of the PATH.

The shell is PowerShell 7 when it is installed, otherwise Windows PowerShell; one of them is on every Windows.

Resolution

  1. Install the add-in from the SDK package and leave the package where it is (bin and addin side by side), or put the bin folder of the SDK on the PATH (Install the SDK).
  2. Restart Access, so it sees a changed PATH or WKL_OFFICE_CLI.
  3. Click Terminal again, or New shell in the bar of the tab Terminal.
