The ribbon tab WKL SDK is missing
Access starts, but the ribbon has no tab WKL SDK, although wkl-office addin install reported success.
Environment
WKL Office SDK 0.1.0 and later, Microsoft 365 Access, add-in registered for the current Windows user.
Cause
First check what is open. From 0.2.1 the tab is hidden on purpose in the Access runtime (/runtime or the Access
Runtime) and when the open file is not an ACCDB (ACCDE, ACCDR, MDE, MDB, ADP): users of a delivered application must not
see a developer tool. The add-in stays loaded; the tab appears again in a full Access with an ACCDB, or with no database
open.
Otherwise one of these, in the order wkl-office addin status tells them apart:
addin status reports | Cause |
|---|---|
not registered | The add-in was never installed for this Windows user, or it was removed. Registration is per user: another user's installation does not count. |
registered, not listed in Access | The entry through which Access loads the add-in is missing (removed by hand or by a cleanup tool). |
listed in Access (LoadBehavior 2) | Access loaded the add-in once, it failed, and Access switched it off. Access does this by itself after an error while loading. |
listed in Access (LoadBehavior 3) | The add-in is set up correctly. Then Access itself does not load it: it is in the list of disabled items of Office, or this Access was started by another program. |
An Access started by another program (automation, a build, a test run) never shows the commands of the add-in: the add-in stays inactive when the user did not start Access, so builds and tests behave as without it.
Installing or removing takes effect at the next start of Access only.
Resolution
- Run
wkl-office addin statusin a terminal. - For
not registeredornot listed in Access: runwkl-office addin install, close every Access window, start Access again. - For
LoadBehavior 2: runwkl-office addin installagain (it sets the add-in back to load at start), or tick WKL Office SDK under File › Options › Add-ins › Manage: COM Add-ins › Go…. Then restart Access. If the tab disappears again after the next start, the add-in fails while loading: check that the .NET Desktop Runtime 10 of the bitness of Office is installed (Install the SDK). - For
LoadBehavior 3: open File › Options › Add-ins › Manage: Disabled Items › Go…; if WKL Office SDK is listed, select it and choose Enable. Restart Access. If Access was started by another program, start it yourself (Start menu, or by opening the database in Explorer).
