Prerequisites
What a workstation and an OData service must provide so that Access, DAO, or ADO.NET can work through the OData ODBC driver: Windows, the bitness of the application, rights to install, and an encrypted connection. The section below lists the environments the driver supports.
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows for the installation package. On 32-bit Windows, set up the x86 driver for one user |
| Bitness | that of the application: a 32-bit application (32-bit Office) loads only the x86 driver, a 64-bit application only the x64 driver. The installation package installs both |
| .NET runtime | not needed; the DLL contains everything it requires |
| Rights to install | Administrator for the installation package: the Driver Manager looks up a driver name only in the computer's registry. Without administrator rights, it works only for one user, through a data source |
| Applications | Access or the Access Runtime, DAO, ADO.NET (System.Data.Odbc), Visual Studio; the environments the driver is released for are listed below |
| Service | OData v4 with JSON and $metadata; what it must offer for writing, grouping, pass-through, and transactions is described in Requirements for an OData service |
| Connection | https, with a certificate that Windows trusts. Over http to another computer, the driver sends no password, no personal key, and no session; a service key would travel there in plain text. Unencrypted http therefore makes sense only to your own computer |
Supported environments
| Item | Supported |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 (version 1607 or later) and 11, Windows Server 2016 or later |
| Office | Access 2010 or later, or the Access Runtime, 32-bit or 64-bit, with the driver in the same bitness as Office |
| Programming interfaces | DAO and ADO.NET on .NET 10, .NET 8, and .NET Framework 4.8, in 32-bit and 64-bit processes; Visual Studio with Server Explorer and the TableAdapter Configuration Wizard |
| Sign-in | Windows account through Kerberos or NTLM, name and password, personal key with a second factor, service key |
| Service | Data service Wkl.Data.Gateway with SQL Server 2016 or later |
An OData v4 service other than Wkl.Data.Gateway must meet the Requirements for an OData service; check how it behaves before you put it into use.
