Create a project

This page is for wiki administrators. If you only want to use a project, you don't need it — start with Working with projects instead.

Three steps

  1. Open the project list and choose New project in its filter bar.
  2. Enter a title. The key and the description are optional.
  3. Confirm with Create project.

The new project's start page opens. That one step created three things:

  • the project's record in the data store, which work items, queries and risks belong to;
  • the project's pages: start page, board, queries and the other areas;
  • its access rules: anyone without a role in the project can't see it.

Next, add the people who should see and edit the project under Manage members on its start page.

Only administrators see the command. For everyone else, it isn't shown in the project list.

The project key

The key is the last part of every address in the project, for example en:projects:customerportal. If you leave the field empty, it is derived from the title: “Customer Portal 2027” becomes customerportal2027. Use 2 to 32 lowercase letters and digits, starting with a letter.

The data store files connections, mounts and work items under the key, so it can't be changed after the project is created. If another project already uses the title or the key, the form says so at that field and keeps everything else you entered.

A start page alone is not a project

A start page created by hand under en:projects: makes a project show up in the list. But you can't create work items in it, and it has no access rules of its own. Always use New project to create projects.

A project without wiki pages

A project can also exist without wiki pages if repositories are assigned to it. It then appears in the project list with its repositories as the entry point instead of a project page.

That isn't a special case — it's the usual one for projects that exist before their documentation does. Administrators and the project's maintainers find Create project space on its card; it adds the pages and the access rules, and the project then uses its start page as the entry point.

Opening up another language

The project root depends on the language. A project under sl:projects: is recognized the same way as soon as it has a start page there.

Opening up another language takes two more pages there, next to the projects:

  • <language>:projects:sidebar with the menu block
  • <language>:projects:order for the order

The namespace is spelled out in full in the menu block on purpose. Without it, automatic detection walks up to the language root and pulls the wiki's other areas into the menu.
